BVA Live: Does running a successful practice jeopardise our commitment to animal welfare and contextualised care?

This follows the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) recent announcement of a formal ‘market investigation’ into veterinary services for household pets, highlighting concerns about limited treatment options for clients.

Does running a successful practice jeopardise our commitment to animal welfare and contextualised care? will look at what contextualised care means, what defines a successful practice and what this means for animal welfare as well as the importance of understanding the animal’s needs alongside the owner’s circumstances and abilities.

The session will be run in association with the British Veterinary Association’s (BVA) charity, the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF). Chaired by BVA Junior Vice President Elizabeth Mullineaux, the speakers include Adam Tjolle, Professor and Chair of General Veterinary Practice from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies; Andrea Jeffery, Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of Bristol; and Kate Higgins, Director of Village Vets Formby. There will also be an opportunity for delegates to ask questions and discuss their own experiences of providing contextualised care.

BVA Junior Vice President Elizabeth Mullineaux said: “Contextualised care is the core theme of this year’s BVA Live. When discussed against the backdrop of the CMA’s market investigation into veterinary services and changes to practice ownership, it’s an important topic that is likely to bring a variety of strong opinions. It’s critical that we explore these challenging issues and I’m looking forward to hearing the views of our panelists, alongside the debate from the floor.”

Does running a successful practice jeopardise our commitment to animal welfare and contextualised care? takes place at 12pm – 1pm on Friday 7 June 2024 in the Business, Careers and Debates Theatre at BVA Live.
