To celebrate LGBT+ History Month, throughout February we are featuring Q&As with some key role models. Veterinary Nursing Manager Craig Bailey shares his experiences working in the veterinary profession.
What inspired your path into the veterinary profession?
My passion for the veterinary profession started at a very young age. Growing up with horses, I was always fascinated by the vet’s visits to the yard. I’d eagerly follow them around holding their important equipment and asking endless questions. That early exposure cemented my desire to work with animals. I took my first steps into the profession as a "Saturday Boy" at a local practice, cleaning kennels and assisting the nurses and vets. Those weekends spent observing the care and dedication of the veterinary team left a lasting impression, reinforcing my commitment to this career path. From those humble beginnings, I knew that this was where I belonged!
What has been the most challenging part of your career?
One of the toughest moments in my career was when a vet advised me to "tone down my campness" because they believed the clients wouldn't respond well to it. This struck a deep chord, as it echoed the challenges I had faced throughout my school life with bullying for characteristics I couldn't change; This Was Me. Hearing this as I was starting to build my career made me question whether the veterinary profession was a safe and accepting space for someone like me. For a time, it made me doubt if I truly had a future in the field. However, with support from amazing colleagues and mentors, I’ve learnt to embrace my authenticity and recognise that it is not only my strength but also an essential part of the compassionate care I strive to provide.
What has been the best part of your career so far?
A career highlight to date has been learning and achieving the skill set required to flourish as a Cardiothoracic Surgery Nurse. Supporting an incredible surgical team, clients and their pets from across the globe with pre-surgical advice and aftercare has been incredibly rewarding. During my time with MARS Veterinary Health, I approached the company directors with grass root ideas for improving LGBT+ culture, allyship and belonging that transformed into a thinktank of incredible people who embraced a positive culture that still lives on today. Beyond that, the best part of my career has been my leap into management at AURA Veterinary. It's been a privilege to mentor and support others. Watching team members grow, succeed and find their confidence has been an incredible joy. Being part of a diverse, compassionate, and collaborative BVLGBT+ community reminds me daily why I chose this path. Those moments of genuine connection, whether with colleagues, clients, or animals, are what make this career so fulfilling.
What advice would you offer to someone experiencing difficulty with their sexuality or gender identity?
First and foremost, know that you are not alone and there is a community out there ready to support and celebrate your authentic self. Coming from a Catholic community, I was terrified about my true self making an unannounced appearance. I think school life has its impact on our community most here, but never forget your identity is a strength, not a weakness. Take the time to find mentors, allies, and networks where you feel safe and supported. It's okay to set boundaries and it's okay to take things at your own pace.
Remember, you deserve to be in spaces where you can thrive as your authentic self. Your experiences bring valuable perspective and resilience, which can positively impact not only your journey but also the wider profession as you grow. Never stay in a workplace that doesn’t embrace and champion you!
