Veterinary Medicines Regulations update

On 17 November, the final changes to the Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMRs) will come into force. These were passed in Parliament earlier this year as part of the Veterinary Medicines (Amendment etc.) Regulations 2024. Most significant for vets are the updated prescription requirements. Veterinary prescriptions must now include a statement that it is an offence to alter a prescription, and (if applicable) a statement that antibiotics have been supplied for prophylactic or metaphylactic purposes. The BVA prescription form has been updated to comply with these changes.

Any prescription of antibiotics for prophylactic purposes must now be documented, with the reason for doing so, and a management review carried out to prevent the need for further such prescriptions. The requirements are set out here in more detail.

In a positive move to counter prescription fraud, the regulations also now require online pharmacies to register with VMD.

Full details of the changes are available online at the VMD information hub.
